"I began telling them that if they would buy a Mac, I would give them 24/7 tech support without complaint. Initially, they scoffed, but as the Mac became fashionable, I had more and more family members calling to let me know they had switched. Now, most of them are Mac users and the rate of support calls have dropped from several a month to several a year."

Brilliant.

The street as platform

The way the street feels may soon be defined by what cannot be seen with the naked eye.

You’ll want to Instapaper this one.

The cult of busy

This is the cult of busy. That simply by always seeming to have something to do, we all assume you must be important or successful.

"There’s just something different about holding that Web page in your hands, rather than seeing it on a desktop or laptop PC, or on a tiny iPhone screen. Tapping on links doesn’t feel the same as clicking on them with a mouse. It’s a good feeling."

Apple iPad Review by Macworld

Totally, totally agree.

"Create something excellent where the technology is transparent, and allow only the curious to look under the hood to actually see what’s going on. JavaScript, Flash, HTML5, tables, Shockwave, Unity—no one cares when people using it can do what they’re supposed to. When something is broken—whether it’s functionality or the user experience—that’s when you’ll hear whining about platforms. Create a great experience for people and you’ll receive due praise, regardless of the technology."

Flash and Standards: The Cold War of the Web on A List Apart

"One melancholy thought occurs as my fingers glide and flow over the surface of this astonishing object: Douglas Adams is not alive to see the closest thing to his Hitchhiker’s Guide that humankind has yet devised."

Stephen Fry in The iPad Launch: Can Steve Jobs Do It Again?

"In many ways, it’s the things that are not there that we are most proud of. For us, it is all about refining and refining until it seems like there’s nothing between the user and the content they are interacting with."

J. Ive as quoted in The iPad Launch: Can Steve Jobs Do It Again?

"There is absolutely nothing about the iPad that portends the end of innovation, tinkering, programming, design. If that were the case, there wouldn’t be 150,000 applications on the App Store right this second. So what if you can’t make iPad programs on an iPad. I don’t complain I can’t make new dishwashers with my dishwasher."

Netflix Introduces iPad, Gets Nothing But Complaints

It’s been available in the app store for 24 hours now, but Netflix just officially announced its iPad app.

Right now there are 37 comments, and nearly every one of them is a complaint. Where’s the iPhone/iTouch version? is by far the most popular, but others range from “you’ve severely limited my ability to find movies by removing friend functionality” to “When do we get a android version?” and my personal favorite, which simply says “Linux?”. Only a single comment says “thank you” and only a handful have anything positive to say at all.

You may not be buying an iPad. You may not even have Netflix. But please acknowledge that the Netflix team has put in a lot of work to provide many people with a very useful app.
